Medical and prosthetic inventor Willem Kolff has died, at the age of 97. He officially retired 22 years ago, and unofficially retired 11 years ago, yet kept working on prosthetics until death caught up with him, on February 11, 2009.
Kolff is held responsible for the first functional artificial heart pump, and first functional artificial eye.
