We're a long way from the futuristic, and highly desirable personal autonomous agents from books like Otherland, but there is now promise. Autonomous agents are still in the labs, but they are swiftly now, evolving into the future of stock market trend setters, and network designers.

Over the past year, NASA has been uploading software into the Earth Observing-1 satellite, turning it into a testbed for autonomous agents, totally separated from direct human interference.

Autonomous agents (Virtual Humans) have the potential to become an extraordinarily powerful technology, with the capacity to learn, experiment and act independently to human control - almost intelligent alife if you will.

NASA already uses autonomous agents to control seemingly simple, yet deceptively complex situations that may occur.

"What happens if you run out of power and you're on the dark side of the planet and the communications systems is having a problem? It's all those combinations that make life exciting," says Steve Chien, principal scientist for automated planning and scheduling at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, USA.
