Date posted: 23/08/2004 Ever fancied becoming a cartoon character? New software, debutted at SIGGRAPH 2004 makes it possible - sortof. Computer scientist Michael Cohen, of Microsoft research in Redmond, Washington created the system to turn normal video photography into cartoons. The software scans the recording, identifies the major objects by the amount of movement they create, then turns those objects into cartoon graphics which smoothly animate in the same movements. The system uses continuous movement, as opposed to frames, so the final result can be further morphed however the artist sees fit. This technology could also be used to speed up CGI animations - by having an actor perform them, and the system model the result.
