Researchers from Torino Polytechnic, an Italian University, have developed a distributed processing system that allows palmtop computers to display 3D environments. Graphics processing has always been far beyond the capabilities of palmtop PCs as the environments require hefty processing power to render ? palmtops just are simply not powerful enough to do it in real-time.

Specialized network graphics servers pre-render the scene each palmtop should be displaying, then wire the results to them as a video display image. The palmtop then processes any user actions and wires them back to the graphics server, in a high-bandwidth system. With one graphiccs server performing the processing for many palmtops, high degrees of interactivity are possible.
