Benoit Dawant, an electrical engineer at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, US, and colleagues are attempting to combine the data from a large number of patient treatments with deep brain stimulation using implanted electrodes, in order to create an "atlas" of the brain showing where best to apply stimulation for various conditions.

This information could be used to design a signal pattern to treat a particular individual's condition in advance, depending on where the electrodes have been implanted. This should then dramatically reduce discomfort patients experience when the stimulator is being set up.
