A computer specialist is that gives virtual beings sensory powers.

Tony Conde, a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), has been honoured with an award from Vaud?s capital for his development of software that gives sensory perception to AI.

Conde has developed computer software that creates autonomous virtual humans with sensory responses that simulate vision, hearing and touch.

These bots are capable of learning, analysing and even forgetting, according to Conde. A virtual human that is aware of it environment is essential, particularly for simulators use to test motor vehicles or to pilot a plane.

?Thanks to our work, a virtual being is able to reason by itself after unforeseen events,? Conde said.

Apart from potential industrial applications, Conde is interested in expanding the capabilities of video games. In two or three years, he said, such games will have characters capable of sensation and ?presence.? The software will also allow for improvements in animated films, Conde said.
