Most hacker types don't go in for garish avatars, because they know it takes a lot more sophistication to render a realistic human face than a talking penis.

Our Thoughts on this Quote

There is a lot of truth to this statement. Even in cyberspace, where we are (more-or-less) freed of the restrictions of the appearance and mannerisms of our physical birth-bodies, appearance matters.

Perhaps it could even be said to matter more in such virtual environments, precisely because any marks, blemishes or disfigurements we were born with, or acquired over the years, are completely absent.

Thus, the more seriously you wish to be taken, and the more weight you wish your projection of your abilities to have, then the more effort you have to put into crafting your appearance.

Online or not, the one thing that doesn't change is the psychology of the people you are interacting with. A smartly dressed 'dress for success' person is more likely to be taken seriously than one who just 'threw something together', that is true. But also, in a realm where the uncanny valley rules, and making something that really looks human without looking just plain creepy, being able to come close to normal with your avatar's appearance and mannerisms whilst still having something that is unique to you, is just going to scream competence at the people you meet.

It almost becomes a better advertisement for your abilities and standards, than anything you could say yourself.

The user can select three breast sizes: improbable, impossible, and ludicrous. Brandy has a limited repertoire of facial expressions: cute and pouty; cute and sultry; perky and interested; smiling and receptive; cute and spacy. Her eyelashes are half an inch long and the software is so cheap that they are re...
