Cognitive Radio

Cognitive Radio is a type of smart radio tranceiver capable of detecting attenuation of signal on its current frequency, and testing alternative frequencies to regain a good lock and maintain a constant data transmission speed with other tranceiver nodes on its network.

At the same time, cognitive radio systems avoid other users on the radio spectrum. They are made aware via standards, of which frequencies they are not permitted to cross into, and they are intelligent enough to detect local usage other than their own on otherwise available frequencies. They know to avoid these and thus not interfere with other traffic in the vicinity.

Thus, cognitive radios are an essential component of a fully functional sensor web, with each wireless sensor altering its communications frequencies and methods in an intelligent manner so as to maintain optimum connectivity.

In other cases, such as high-volume sensory immersion as in telepresence and full VR environments, are able to maintain consistent data transfer rates over cognitive radio systems,

Likewise, data transfers over the airwaves for high volume sensory interfaces can in theory continue uninterrupted as the radio transceivers shuffle frequencies in the background.
