Cognitive Radio

Cognitive Radio is a type of smart radio tranceiver capable of detecting attenuation of signal on its current frequency, and testing alternative frequencies to regain a good lock and maintain a constant data transmission speed with other tranceiver nodes on its network.

At the same time, cognitive radio systems avoid other users on the radio spectrum. They are made aware via standards, of which frequencies they are not permitted to cross into, and they are intelligent enough to detect local usage other than their own on otherwise available frequencies. They know to avoid these and thus not interfere with other traffic in the vicinity.

Thus, cognitive radios are an essential component of a fully functional sensor web, with each wireless sensor altering its communications frequencies and methods in an intelligent manner so as to maintain optimum connectivity.

In other cases, such as high-volume sensory immersion as in telepresence and full VR environments, are able to maintain consistent data transfer rates over cognitive radio systems,

Likewise, data transfers over the airwaves for high volume sensory interfaces can in theory continue uninterrupted as the radio transceivers shuffle frequencies in the background.

RFID: Beginnings of the sensor web?
RFID ? Radio Frequency Identification. These small tags are starting to drift everywhere. Powered by the radio field the reader sends out when it scans for a tag, these tiny, primitive devices may actually be heralds of the sensor web.

Mind as Machine: A History of Cognitive Science comes as a two volume set, of 1631 pages between them. They are the first attempt at chronicling the entire 50-year history of the field, and showing how the paths are laid for future research. Both books are invaluable for this reason, as well as providing very intriguing and useful reading for anyone interested in creating powerful AI, or interfacing their brain with a computer, or even seeing where others have trod before.

Large Image Display: AWGate 5.0: Music Appreciation
ActiveWorlds Gate 5.0 launched on November the 26th 2009, in readiness for the launch of ActiveWorlds 5.0 on December the 1st 2009. Here we see one of the rooms off of the main concourse, where the company nods politely to all the independent radio firms that operate within it's platform. Eight platforms are available. To hear the music, just stand in the column-shaped invisible zone on top of each disk, and the music will start streaming, assuming the radio station lives long enough of course. This location brings home another problem the platform is trying to hide - the steady decline of users.

RFID and the Brain
Radio frequency identification tags, and the human brain. They don't appear to have much in common, at first glance. Yet, there is a way to merge the two into one device, a procedure being pioneered by MicroTransponder, a Dallas-based start-up.
