Distributed Raytracing

Distributed Raytracing, sometimes called Stochastic Raytracing, is the most powerful raytracing method currently employed. It simulates simulating the diffuse light distribution and reflection in three-dimensional environments near perfectly. The downside is, it takes a lot of heavy computing power to do this, and is completely useless for real-time, dynamic lighting of a scene using current technology, and for the foreseeable future.

Distributed Raytracing is a brute force method to create effects like anti aliasing or motion blur. The raytracer tends to continue in methodical fashion, in a forwards raytracing style, until every pixel in sight has been hit anywhere from 25 to 64 times. Thus a complete picture of the lighting and shadows, accurate to the smallest possible degree, is produced.

With the current surge in uses of the iphone as a distributed computing device, and several industries, most notably medical healthcare taking it up in increasing numbers, there has not been a better time to learn to code this small, sleek device.

The virtual worlds of today are essentially hierarchical systems. A small number of servers which hold the data for the worlds, and an innumerable number of client connections, largely untrusted. This resource, half article/half rant, looks at the virtual worlds of tomorrow; at distributed systems, and world browsers.
