Early Ray Termination

Early ray termination is a technique in raytracing and raycasting, typically for volume rendering rather than polygon based rendering. Because volume rendering deals with solid 3D shapes, with render data right the way through them, light rays are calculated as they pass through the mass. If at any point, the amount of reflected or absorbed light is equal to or greater than the remaining intensity of the ray, there is no point calculating the remainder of its path through the object data, and it is terminated.
