Retessellation

Polygonal 3D models are usually rendered as tesselations of triangular primitives. This is because it is easier for a computer system to render millions of identical triangles than thousands of each type of a thousand different shapes. Sometimes it is necessary to change a model to be made of more or less triangles. This is either for purposes of higher model accuracy (more triangles) or faster render times (less triangles). This is the process of retessellation.

A tessellated mesh is converted to a different format, usually consisting of curves, so it can be manipulated algorithmically, then retessellated at a different detail level.
