Smart Material

A smart material, is a material with properties that are altered in response to external stimuli of various kinds. They are most often used as sensor systems, as the reaction to stimuli enables an attached system to calculate the strength of that effect.

As such they are a prime ingredient in reactive interfaces such as haptic devices, and position sensors.

A Literal Sensor Web Comes into Its Own
It was only a matter of time before someone took the concept of a sensor web literally, and created a smart mesh web that could cover an object and detect when and where any breaches in the web occur. That wait is now over, and the first such smart fabric now exists.

Implant Coating to Revolutionise Prosthetics
As is well known, the greatest difficulty with prosthetic implants that invade the body, is the material that comes into contact with the flesh of an organic form. If it is too smooth, flesh does not bond with it well, and it slips. Too rugged and it becomes a nesting ground for bacteria. That's not even touching on the immune reaction if the material is the wrong type and is seen as a threat.

Podcast: John La Grou plugs smart power outlets
This podcast comes from TED 2009, where electronics inventor John La Grou shows off the capabilities of a sensor web of smart power outlets in every home, where the outlet knows what is plugged into it, and how much power the device is consuming, and when it consumes it.

The first book of the series is a 240 page graphic novel, and is the material the Surrogates film was based on, although the filrm takes the material and runs into loonyville with it. This on the other hand is hard core science fiction, slowly becoming science fact. It is filled with deep exposition scenes, carefully thought out quirks, and fodder for the brain, based on current trends.

Large Image Display: Animatrix: Beyond: Arriving On Scene
Whilst it is true that an administration vehicle in a heavily natural laws based VR would have to obey those physical laws or risk damage to the simulation wherever it traveled, it is also true that it can bend the rules to a degree. An invincible construction material is impossible within those laws, but a fantastic material that can absorb almost every blow, and can smash through a wall at 70mph, without taking a dent, is theoretically not impossible. That's good enough to avoid breaking the rules.
