Troll Test

The Troll Test is a measurement of how well a world handles roleplay. It tests whether you are forced to pick a predetermined choice, or if it supports true freedom of rp (actions 'outside the box').

The troll test is this:

You encounter a troll. In your left hand you have a torch. In your right hand you have a sword. The basic options are Fight, Flee, Cast Spell.
Your choice?

Most cRPGs expect you to choose one of the stated options. However, if you are roleplaying, then you can decide to fight the troll say, by using the torch on your head, to set fire to your hair, and then headbutting the troll.

It most likely will do more damage to you than the troll, but you are allowed to do it. Alternatively, you could slap the troll silly, or strap the torch to your sword, and hit them with both, or decide to kick the troll in the nether regions -then- run, or do something completely different.

It should be possible.

The original role-play worlds, the pen and paper based ones, all pass. These embody the spirit of roleplay. No computer-based world has yet passed the troll test. In many ways, the Troll Test is a measurement for RPI as strong as the Turing Test is for AI.

The Loebner Prize
The Loebner Prize for artificial intelligence is an annual contest, designed to put artificially intelligent chat programs through their paces. It uses the Turing Test for AI, as conceptualised by Alan Turing in the 1950 paper "Computing machinery and intelligence". In the decades since then, the Loebner prize is the first attempt to take the Turing test seriously, as a benchmark for AI.

Virtual Voice: Ultimate RolePlaying Hook
In roleplaying, nothing breaks immersion more than hearing the voice of the player when its not appropriate for the role. The voice of a 10 year old girl coming from the troll about to smack you into next week, or a butch, and manly seductress just breaks immersion entirely. Either online roleplay should be limited to just text whilst everything else goes voice, or a new approach is required.
