Ultrasonic Trackers

Ultrasonic tracking devices are one of five discrete kinds of tracker used for 3D positioning in VR hardware. They consist of three high frequency sound wave emitters arranged in a set formation upon the user. Three transceivers, set perpendicular to each other, surround the user.

Both the transceivers and the emitters emit the same ultrasonic pulse, then hardware attached to the transceivers compares the incoming ultrasonic signal to the local one, calculating the offset. Since the speed of sound through air is known, distance can thus be calculated. By pulsing the signals, multiple ultrasonic devices can be triangulated on the same person, faster than humanly noticeable.

The problem with ultrasonic, is the emitters must each always have a direct line of sight to the transceivers. Put a body part in front of one, and the sound signal is disrupted enough to be useless.
