Alpha Mapped Texture

An alpha mapped texture is a texture which has gained a new non-visual data channel. This channel is usually greyscale, or a single colour channel and matches the image size pixel by pixel. Instead of displaying the image itself, it displays a gradient range from pure white to either black or a pure single colour. These values map exactly to the level of transparency in that part of the image. Typically 0 is completely solid, 255 is completely transparent, and everything else is a gradient in between.

Haptics: Texture
Haptics is the study of the sense of touch. There are many parts to touch, and five different types of touch nerve in the nervous system. Here, we look at what goes into detecting texture, how the nerves work, and some initial attempts to interface with them for VR.

Messing with Tangent Space
Tangent space is sometimes called texture space. It is the co-ordinate systems for one face of any 3D skinned model. Use of tangent space, which this tutorial covers, is necessary to properly map a texture onto part of a 3D shape.

Production Testing and Bug Tracking
It's standard in the software development timescale, to leave bug-tracking, and problem solving until the Alpha development phase, when balancing is usually handled. This article from the game development professional's point of view, looks at why that is a bad idea, and strategies for handling bugs before they get to that stage.

Mapping Intelligence to the Brain
Intelligence. We understand the concept, and the meaning of this word, but where in the brain, precisely, is intelligence actually located? Until recently, we did not really, have a clue. Now, using perhaps the most common sense approach possible, from neuroscientists at the California Institute of Technology have mapped the cognitive zones of the human brain.
