Alpha mapping is essentially a technique for making parts of a texturemap transparent by creating an alpha channel from the image. The channel is usually greyscale, or a single colour channel and matches the image size pixel by pixel. Instead of displaying the image itself, it displays a gradient range from pure white to either black or a pure single colour. These values map exactly to the level of transparency in that part of the image. Typically 0 is completely solid, 255 is completely transparent, and everything else is a gradient in between.

This book is an attempt to cross-reference the techniques of mapping and charting the physical world, with attempts to chart cyberspace. All of cyberspace, from individual virtual environments, through to the world wide web, as a single cohesive whole, a second world of many worlds, for others to explore, possessing the maps to do so.
It's standard in the software development timescale, to leave bug-tracking, and problem solving until the Alpha development phase, when balancing is usually handled. This article from the game development professional's point of view, looks at why that is a bad idea, and strategies for handling bugs before they get to that stage.

Eventually maps became digital, and all manner of computerised versions sprung up. Yet, for all the centralisation, and innovation, one thing never changed: For all their promise, computer based maps look, and function exactly the same as their printed brethren.
