Anisotropic filtering

Anisotropic filtering is a method of improving on isometric MIP mapping techniques. It is a graphical image enhancement method in which the textures on an object being viewed, which cover surfaces at an almost oblique angle to the camera viewpoint, are adjusted from their normal method of display.

Left unadjusted, the squishing of a texture on a surface viewed at a near right angle would amplify the effect, making it appear that that plane is actually perpendicular to the object and distorting the perceived shape.

Anisotropic filtering eliminates antialiasing, and reduces blurring substantially. However, it is a computationally expensive algorithm, and requires graphic accelerator hardware in order to function at interactive speeds.
