Artificial Ecology

An artificial ecology is an attempt to simulate in high fidelity virtually, a fully working ecology with plants, animals and players living in balanced ecology. The last non-academic attempt of this was in Ultima Online in 1996. Back then, the experiment failed for two reasons:

* The simulated ecology creatures did not age, nor did they have natural death. The only way they could die was through being killed for experience by either human players, or AI controlled predators.

* There was no cap on the maximum experience level of a predator, so predators kept on killing, and kept on levelling up. Predators levelled up until they were nearly indestructible.

* When UO opened, it opened with an ecology designed for one tenth of the actual players it received, resulting in a mass extinction wave in which players swept across the server, killing everything in sight until a barren wasteland was left.

Animals to Animats is a conference. It is held every two years, at various locations around the world, and brings together researchers from ethology, psychology, ecology, artificial intelligence, artificial life, robotics, engineering, and many other related fields, seeking to bind the disciplines together, and take animal cognition from the natural world, recreating it in alife.
