Asthenopia
Asthenopia is the clinical name for eye strain or eye fatigue that is triggered when the eye is constantly staring at an image the same distance away, whilst trying to refocus to follow apparent differences in distance. Typically this is caused by long periods staring at monitors or TV screens.
It manifests itself as fatigue, blurred vision, or pain in the eyes, as the ciliary muscles are working overtime to cope with the intense focus. Treatments for it include looking away at regular short intervals to allow the eye to focus naturally, or using a non screen based display. Direct retinal displays bypass this problem as they allow the eye to focus however it wishes, without distorting the image.
