BSE

Brain Stimulated Environments (BSE) are the theoretical field of study brought on by the experiments of the neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield in the 1960s. Using a thin electrode to actively stimulate areas of an -awake- patient's central cortex, they were able to force specific memories to rise to the surface.

This could theoretically be used to craft a virtual environment based on the person's own memories, although no practical attempt has yet been made.
