Bounding Ellipsoid A bounding ellipsoid is a mathematical elongated mathematical sphere as opposed to polygonal, that encloses a more complex 3D polygonal object, as snugly as is practical. It is often used where a bounding sphere would be impractical, extending too far out into empty space. It is used to computationally cheapen collision detection, and so speed up the handling of physics and haptics.
