Brain Machine Interface

Brain Machine Interfaces or BMI (Also sometimes known as Brain Computer Interfaces or BCI) is one of the oldest fields in virtual reality, stretching back to the very first experiments with virtual reality devices.

As the name suggests, BMI is all about directly connecting the human brain to machines, such that the electrical impulses in the brain might drive those machines.

For decades this field languished at the fringes of human computer interface research, until the early 2000s when a multitude of direct connection methods including TMR, 3D EEG and ECoG were pioneered that opened whole new ways to both invasively and non, interface with the thoughts of the central nervous system, and the muscle control codes of the peripheral nervous system.

Currently, with the rise of neurogaming - controlling both games and virtual environments alike through the use of direct thought control, brain machine interfaces of all types and sizes are receiving more attention than ever before, and beginning to enter the mainstream.
