DEM

A DEM or Digital Elevation Model is a raster image of a contour map, usually derived from digital imaging to create an accurate model of a section of terrain, down to minute detail.

Typically, DEMs are used with satellite imaging to create vast terrain maps that form the basis for a simulation of a given area of planetary landmass.
