Eliza Effect The Eliza Effect has its roots in the experiments of MIT computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum in 1966. Weizenbaum developed a crude AI agent called ELIZA, named after the main character in George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play, Pygmalion, which is based in turn on the Greek myth of Galatea, the statue come to life.
