Finger Vein Authentication

Finger vein authentication is a biometric identification technology which employs near infrared light to observe finger vein patterns. It has strong advantages as a verification technique in immersive environments, because it does not interrupt the sensory experience, and can be combined with other interface hardware, yet remains secure and accurate.

The X-finger currently retails for $10,000 US$ each piece, and does not rely on any form of robotics to articulate. It fits over the stub of an amputated finger, and the wearer simply pushes against a lever with the remaining portion of their finger, which sets the knuckles into motion.

Finger Movement Patterns for Complex Tasks Anticipate the Position for Task after Next
The movement of the natural body when it comes to in depth, detailed tasks that require lots of little finger movements, is it seems, something which is defined as much by the tasks before and after the one the fingers are doing, as it is by the task the fingers are doing right now. This is a real problem when it comes to figuring out how to replicate natural-looking finger movements.

Ishikawa Komuro Lab's high-speed robot hand
In May 2009, the Ishikawa Komuro Lab in Japan, demonstrated the capabilities that robotic manipulation of objects had reached. They had created a three-finger robot arm, with tactile sensors on its fingers, with each finger capable of independent 180 x 180 x 360 motion. All three were connected to a high-speed machine vision camera.

Hacked: The Mathematics of Leaf Vein Architecture
The math by which the veins of leaves are formed has been cracked. By extension, the reasons for leaf size and shape have been cracked, and equations for creating the types of leaves that would service a given plant have been laid bare. Ideal material for anyone wishing to model a realistic but not physically real, plant.

The Looming Shadow of DVT
DVT or Deep Vein Thrombosis is a condition which is already known to affect airline travellers, and office workers. Thrombosis occurs when people are sitting still for long periods of time. Blood clots form in the arteries where blood is settling over long periods of time - as opposed to circulating properly when moving briskly around. This tends to be more of a problem in the lower legs when sitting, but can occur in any part of the body when fully reclined.

Fluidhand is a product of the Orthopaedic University Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany. It is the first complete hand prosthesis in which each finger moves separately, without being a separate unit.

Touchscreen Use in All Weather
Industry News

Touchscreen technology has until now, had one strong disadvantage: In inclement weather, wet, freezing cold hands result from touchscreen use, as gloves and other finger protectors have always made fingers too big and bulky to effectively use touchscreen technology, whilst masking tactile feedback with the glove?s spongy surface.

Extra Sensory Perceptions: Sensing Magnetic Fields
The first known, successful implant of an extra sensory perception to detect magnetic fields the person with the new sense was near, occurred in 2005, when a small piece of neodymium, which is a rare earth metal, that forms a permanent magnet, was coated in a thin layer of silicon, and implanted into an emergency medical technician's finger.
