Geomorphometrics
Geomorphometrics is the application of the study of how physical objects alter in shape and/or size over time, to the geometry, and topography of planetary bodies such as the Earth. Data is typically collected by surface scanning, and loading into virtual environments for manipulation.
Geomorphometric studies are thus a primary source of pre-made terrain maps for use in other virtual environments.
