Global Illumination

In a virtual environment, global illumination takes the same role as soft lighting does in the physical world. It is an illumination source that does not have a point of origin, illuminating all things equally.

Typically this does not involve an actual lightsource, but an offset for all calculations on lighting effects on objects within a set 3D area ? such as the entire environment. Giving them the assumption that a set amount of light is continually falling on every facet of every object.
