High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound High-intensity focused ultrasound or HIFU is a tightly focussed, high-energy ultrasound that is used in augmented surgery. By focussing beams of HIFU on target biological tissue, it is rapidly cooked, destroying it whilst leaving surrounding tissue unaffected. Combined with real-time imaging hardware, it has opened up the ability of robotic surgeons to operate on patients, without having to open them up.
