Inverse Kinematics

Inverse kinematics or IK, is the process of determining where a jointed object such as an avatar limb should be in order to achieve the pose required and realistic contact with surfaces around it. It works in the inverse, as it takes the desired goal state and effects the changes in motion of the component pieces required to achieve this state.

Move a hand of the avatar into position, and IK will move the lower arm, turn the elbow, move the upper arm, move the torso, even rotate the hips, performing every other action necessary to place the hand there without altering the avatar's position. Of course, IK only works like this if the move is possible within joint movement constraints. If not, then the avatar will change position to accomplish the task.
