Isolation tank

An isolation tank is a lightless, soundproof tank. It is used to remove all trace of the outside world. They are slightly larger than a person, and the user floats inside, in salty water at skin temperature.

Salt is added to the water in the tank to raise the density of the water above the density of the human body, so that the subject floats with their face above the water, to breathe.

The ears are submerged, dulling hearing. When the arms float to the side, and the legs are apart, haptic senses drop to nothing, as the body loses all perception of boundaries with the water. Likewise, smell all but disappears.

This then opens the mind up for other sensory stimuli. An isolation tank becomes a sensory tank, when it is used thusly, to strip away all outside stimuli, such that the user responds much more totally to a virtual reality interface, waterproof, in the tank with them.

Robotic Insect: Guided by the Same stimuli
For an insect, it is rather large. Six inches in length, and rolling around on tank treds rather than walking. Yet, this German robot is the same as an insect where it counts - in the brain. It possesses an embodied needs-based AI, itself running on a simplified version of the insect brain, and responds to stimuli from the world around it in the self same way a natural insect would.
