Operant Conditioning
Operant conditioning is a form of psychological behaviour enforcement and learning wherein the user self-modifies their own behaviour according to stimuli.
This is the sort of behavioural modification, conditioning and social learning that immersive virtual environments are most likely to capitalise on, as the virtual environment can be coded specifically to respond to certain types of behaviour in certain ways. Provided the environment is realistic and believable enough,. And the same psychological triggers used in the avatars present, the user should over time modify their own behaviour to coexist with the rules of the simulation. Such behaviour would then carry on, outside of the virtual environment.
