Pre-rendering

The concept of pre-rendering a scene occurs in passive VR only. It is a method by which intricate, detailed scenes are rendered slowly, sometimes over the course of many hours, and then stitched together, frame by frame, into a filmstrip effect.

This is the method used with CGI films, and is the cause of the disparity between them, and on the fly rendering in interactive virtual environments.

Knick Knack
Made in 1989, Knick Knack was a three minute short CG animation by Pixar Studios, featuring what was then the cutting edge of rendering capability, way beyond what real-time renders were capable of. To put it in perspective, this was just six years before Toy Story was released.
