Our perception of the world is driven by sensory input which is sent to our brains through sequences of spikes carried by sensory neurons, an incoming/outgoing "language of the brain". This book explores the way in which the nervous system represents or encodes these sensory signals. 
 Usually when we think of sensory input channels - sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, balance - we think of the traditional hierarchical order, under the brain. It seems that that hierarchy is not as cut and dried as we once thought, with interesting implications for virtual worlds.
 Apparent Sensory Perception, later known as SimStim, is the logic endpoint of passive entertainment, in all forms.
 A look at what taste is, as a sense, and the possible malfunctions - what can go wrong with the taste reaching the brain, attempting to explain in signal propogation terms. Intended to assist the creation of taste-based sensory systems for VR.
The title above should come as no surprise to most people. However, we now have empirical scientific evidence to back this up. When you concentrate your attention or focus on a particular channel of sensory input, it comes in clear and sharp, regardless of the background information. The study focuses on the sense of sight, but what applies there, applies to all.
 The first known, successful implant of an extra sensory perception to detect magnetic fields the person with the new sense was near, occurred in 2005, when a small piece of neodymium, which is a rare earth metal, that forms a permanent magnet, was coated in a thin layer of silicon, and implanted into an emergency medical technician's finger.
 This shows what is essentially a full sensory immersion LAN. An eight person, totally self contained full-immersion VR machine. As shown, the interface method is direct neural biofeedback; the staple for the Matrix universe. Each of the person's brains are connected to the system via their brainstem, allowing full two way bodily sensory stimulus. However, there is no connection to the greater internet.
 Part two of a two-part series taking a look at virtual sex devices as portrayed in the 2007 French film Chrysalis, and comparing them to what we know of real-world counterparts. This part takes a look at the more sophisticated full sensory immersion devices, and how increased sensory presence may actually greatly reduce the risks exposed in part one.
