Shadow Mapping Shadow mapping, sometimes called projective shadowing, is a method of adding shadows to avatars and other objects in 3D environments. Unlike many methods of shadow generation, it does not use ray casting in the calculations. Instead, z buffer data is used. Since by this point in the render cycle, the z buffer has already been used to test for occlusion, the process makes use of data that has already been calculated and would just be thrown away anyway.
