Surface Rendering

Surface Rendering is where volumetric data is converted into geometric primitives. Since the geometry is known, the technique allows shading, and calculations on the data, such as deformations. As the surfaces of the primitives are the only parts kept, and the data inside them is thrown away, as unneeded, it greatly reduces the complexity of data.

Surface rendering is used greatly in graphical VR platforms due to the swiftness of manipulation and deformation.

In some applications, such as medicare, it is hampered slightly by the necessity to be 100% sure of the data. Noise introduced into the system blurs the boundaries between primitives, and surface rendering throws away important information about 3D structure, preventing accurate recovery.
