Synesthesia

Synesthesia is an interesting sensory condition. Capable of involving cross-over between any of the senses, an individual suffering from synesthesia experiences a sensory response in multiple senses to a given stimulus.

For example they may hear colours as well as seeing them, or smell sounds as well as hearing them. The way the brain processes different senses, intermingles and becomes confused, allowing one sense to augment another.

It is an invaluable condition for sensory research, as it gains an insight into how the brain handles information from different senses, and shows in active clarity how the wiring between the modalities is connected. Such information is invaluable for studies into both crossmodal perception and multisensory integration, both of which are vital for full sensory immersion into VR.
