TCP

TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol. Its the fundamental protocol behind the world wide web, and also underpins a fair proportion of virtual worlds.

TCP was designed to survive world war three. It works on the principle of sending numbered 'packets' of information between computers. If packet 35 is expected, and packet 36 is recieved instead, everything stops whilst a request is senr back for packet 35. This ensures that although a transmission may be slow, it will always be complete in every detail. This is not usually the best solution for real-time virtual worlds, and is the main cause of latency or lag,

However, TCP communication is easy to set up, and so is often used by lazy, or ill-informed programmers to create their worlds.

An alternative to TCP is UDP, but that requires significant effort to set up.
