A tethered viewpoint is a view onto a virtual world, that is tied to another object and moves with it, yet not seeing from that object's perspective. Rather, the viewpoint looks over the object's shoulder, or from another angle, seeing the object it is tethered to in third person perspective, but not allowing the user to feel immersed in that object. Third person perspective avatar control being the obvious example - the avatar feels more like a puppet the user controls rather than an embodiment of the user.

If you run a virtual world, whose premise centres around a form of living or lifestyle significantly different from mainstream society; whether roleplay, persona play, or full blown alternate life, the last thing you desire is for people to enter it, completely ignoring the in-world culture and behaving any way they like.
