A tick is a term used predominantly in gameworlds. In social worlds, the same thing is often called a heartbeat. It is, in essence, the time taken for the server controlling the world to run through its execution loop once. At the end of the tick, events from that loop are triggered, and change occurs. In gameworlds monsters respawn after a set number of ticks, or health improves every tick. In social worlds, the heartbeat is often used to control the flow of data to and from bots or other external programs the user chooses to add.
