Translucency

Translucency is one of the more subtle lighting transformations a virtual object can be set up with properties for, to create an advanced effect. It is basically the ability for an opaque object, to show what is behind it when light is shon from behind it. For example a screen door normally looks solid. Turn a light on on the other side, and you see the silhouette of a person moving on the other side.

However, the screen still looks solid, and you cannot see any details. Translucency is normally a property assigned in a virtual environment to one of more faces of a polygonal 3D model, or treated as a natural side effect of a very, very thin voxel based model.
