User-Extensible System A user-extensible system is any program that allows a user to add either functionality or content which was not created by the original developers. In virtual environments, examples range from inbuilt scripting systems, and SDKs, to uploading and sharing models, textures, sounds, and other artwork. This book is basically a combined encyclopaedia of design from four HCI experts, on how to design three dimensional user interfaces, where the depth axis is suddenly critically important. They build on existing 2D paradigms, but recognise that some ? like WIMP ? are almost totally destabilised by the third axis. ![]() In a handful of the more pioneering virtual environments, a system called FaceGen, along with other, similar systems, allows a user to photograph their face from front and side, and use that to put together a 3D model of their physical head, if they so desire, to use for the basis of their avatar presence online.
