VAD

Voice activity detection or VAD, is typically a sub-process of speech recognition. It can of course be used in other ways as well. It functions as a result of analysis software hooked to a microphone, to detect when a human voice is being used. Not so much what is said, just the tonal parameters to indicate the presence or absence of voice.

Other than in speech recognition, this sub-process can be used as a crude input in its own right, or to trigger another process. Especially handy for those who have speech impediments or other difficulties that make full on speech recognition impossible, it acts as a timer, telling other, computation intensive processes such as brain scanning, when to activate.
