VBM
Voxel-based morphometry or VBM is a method of neuroimaging in which a physical brain is scanned, and broken up into a voxel-based volumetric model. In this way, areas with low differentiation between individuals can be consigned to single voxel blocks, whilst areas of interest can be examined at a more simplistic level than examining the neurons directly. Typically each voxel represents the average of many neurons in an area, yet retains the basic 3D structure by nature of its placement.
One of the beneficial effects of this method, is that regardless of the resolution used for voxel size, the resulting 3D model is compatible with any volumetric rendering system, and can be manipulated, sliced, and dissected any way that is desired, without losing information.
