Vertex shader A vertex shader is a type of colour manipulator used to lighten or darken vertices. A vertex is basically a point on a 3D shape where two or more lines meet. If you darken the vertices, the lines interconnecting them also darken, and the facets of the shape shade in gradients around them. This shading is done to show shadows falling across 3D objects, or lights shining upon them, and the lights causing realistic changes in real-time.
