Visible Surface Determination

Visible surface determination or VSD is a similar process to hidden surface determination. The difference is subtle.

Hidden surface determination, also known as hidden surface removal, visible surface determination or occlusion culling, is simply a method of determining in a 3D environment filled with objects of various types, transparencies and distances, which surfaces and parts of surfaces are not visible from a certain viewpoint or viewpoints.

Visible surface determination performs exactly the same task, but instead of marking the hidden areas to throw away, it marks the visible areas to keep. The end result is identical. Once the objects or parts of objects in a 3D environment that are completely obscured by other objects from the point of view of the user?s viewpoint are determined, they can be removed without problem from the rendering process.
