The Z-Buffer is an area of memory on a computer system's graphics card, used to store the Z-axis information about rendered objects. The Z-buffer value of a pixel is used to determine if it is behind or in front of another pixel. Calculations performed on Z-buffer information prevent background objects from overwriting foreground objects in the frame buffer.
