vnum
Vnum is the common name for an entry in a MUD's core database. There are three different vnum sequences. One is for rooms, numbered from 1 to whatever, a unique vnum for every room in the MUD. One is for NPCs, again numbered from 1 to whatever, and the last is for objects, also 1 to whatever.
In this way, a world can only ever have ONE room 322, one monster 322, and one item 322. Gioven that most MUD databases are not relational, and do not use primary keys as such, this system developed more by practicallity than anything else.
