This single still is from the widescreen version of ?Program?, one of the Animatrix animated shorts. It has been considerably scaled back from the original material. It is one of two such large images showing the process of building a Matrix Universe VR world via the process of animation, which makes it clearer to see what is going on and draw parallels to our own methods of building worlds.

In the second image here, the basic structure has been put in place, the floor and sides of an infinite causeway have formed in the exact same manner to the arches, an identical, repeating pattern that stretches on for practical infinity. Of course because it repeats, creating a seeming infinity does not require much memory at all.

The foliage that springs up to either side is different. It does not repeat noticeably from one section to the next. This suggests it was grown mathematically from a seed algorithm. This is something we have done with computers for decades, in fractal artwork and drawings. Yet, using it to create realistic plants, where no two are ever exactly the same, is something no successful world has ever attempted to do. The question we have to ask, is why? Why not even look at this method of building worlds, when it is perfectly capable of creating levels of realism far and away superior to endless rows of identical trees?
