This single still is from the widescreen version of ?Beyond?, one of the Animatrix animated shorts. It has been considerably scaled back from the original material.
Like most of the Beyond screenshots presented here, this one shows an effect of what happens when the laws of a virtual environment become too complex, and interactions go a little ca ca.
Beyond anything else, this really is a lovely image - an indoor downpour whilst it remains bright and sunny outside. Its iconic almost.
This particular corruption of the Matrix software seems to be derived from a weather zone that as been created in entirely the wrong place. There is no cloud above it, its open roof up there, leading to a cloudless sky. Yet, a rainbow is forming from the interaction with the outside elements and the misplaced zone.
As with every other oddity in Beyond, it has been created out of an area of severe corruption in the Matrix, where files have been partially overwritten in a random order, and the remaining scripts and zones are trying to work as best they can, within the constraints of the Matrix rules. The overarching code won't allow the scripts to break, that would be bad. So instead they have been forced to continue running as best they can, with the simulation all around, interacting with them.
This has created some really odd effects, the indoor rainfall being just one of them. Note too the floorboards. Bone dry even with all that water falling. This is likely because although the weather zone has been created, no script to dictate what happens when the water falling hits objects outside the zone, has been created. Thus, they splash on objects inside the zone, and just fall through everything else.
