Mining is only useful for producing raw ore. Smelting is a separate skill, for turning ore into bars, as you can only carry twenty-six bars at a time, and smelting uses anywhere from one to seven ores per bar, depending on the desired metal, smelting too, slows down to a crawl after a while.

Once the bars are smelt, you then can take a hammer, find an anvil, and, providing your smithing is high enough, fashion a limited collection of items from the bars. There is no variety sadly, and the items are stock, with no difference in craftsmanship between players. An iron helm is an iron helm, whether it was made by a level 20 smith, or a level 20 thousand.
